He has left the city and the usual places to find peace. The treetops close in on him from above and he sinks deeper and deeper while swirling glimpses of memories emerge in the bed of the forest. The green of his eyes are reflections of the trees, which play a significant role in this journey of contemplation. Are the yearnings of the heart quelled by a place of peacefulness and rest?

Throughout the times, the image of the forest has often been used as a theme in legends, fairy tales and in religious history. Stepping into the forest is to take a step into the new and unknown, a journey which often involves trials, obstacles and dangers but also an initiation into a new life. Traditionally the forest is considered home of the soul, but is also characterised as being dark and dangerous and is sometimes consequently portrayed as Hades, the realm of the dead. The forest is something to be penetrated and explored in order to reveal its secrets and gain new insights.
Into the woods was filmed one night in the forest Hareskoven, outside of Copenhagen and is frequently used as teaching material in both secondary schools and high schools.
Premiered at ScreenMoves in Copenhagen February 1st 2011.
